Frequently Asked Questions
- How to Access Your Online Course | Show FAQ
- What is Blackboard and what do I need to use it? | Answer
Blackboard is a web based course management system that MHCC uses to deliver online courses. Students must have, or have access to a computer with an internet service provider and an updated web browser. To see if your computer is capable of successfully allowing you to access the online courses, please select the Check Browser link.
- How do I log into my online course(s)? | Answer
Registered students may access their online course(s) going to http://online.mhcc.edu and entering their student ID# and six-digit birthdate (mmddyy) in the appropriate fields, then select the [login] button.
- I changed my password for online student services but I can't log into my online class. Why? | Answer
Even if you changed your password for online student services when you registered or checked your grades the Distance Learning Program still uses your six-digit birthdate as your password for logging into the online courses.
- I am using my student ID# and six-digit birthdate, but I can't log into my classes. | Answer
Students are allowed access to their online course the morning of the official term start date. If you are unable to login using your student ID and six-digit birthdate then please contact the Distance Learning Program at 503-491-7170 to make sure we have the correct information in our system.
- I just added my online class today but I can't log in to get started. | Answer
If you add an online course after the term begins, you will be granted access the morning of the next business day. To gain access the same day, please contact the Distance Learning Program before 4 p.m. at 503-491-7170 or visit us in AC1373 (behind the radio station).
- I can log into my online course from the college but I cannot log in from home. Why? | Answer
There are a couple different reasons why you might be able to login from one computer but not another. Virus protection and firewalls can block a computer from accessing the College information. Some protection software can be “turned on and off” by clicking the appropriate icon and simply selecting the proper setting. Pop-up blockers must be turned off, also. This can be done from your browser's toolbar or your protection software links. Another common problem is having your computer set to remember passwords. If you accidentally key your password incorrectly, the computer will remember the wrong information. many access problems can be identified by selecting the Check Browser link.
- I can log into my class and view materials; however, I cannot access the chatrooms. What do I need to do so I can participate? | Answer
The most recent version of JAVA must be uploaded and enabled on your computer for the chat rooms to function properly. To find out if your computer has JAVA enabled, please go to http://online.mhcc.edu and click on the Check Browser link. If a red [X] appears over the JAVA icon, you need to install the most recent version. This is free and can be done quickly by going to http://www.java.com and following the instructions.
- I can log into my class but cannot view the course Learning Modules? | Answer
Learning Modules contain the primary instructional material for the course. The majority of MHCC courses have Learning Modules that will only display to the student after the student has completed the Orientation Review Quiz. The Orientation Review quiz is found in the Course Information section of each course. Select the red Course Info button from the course homepage to view the Course Information section. Contact your instructor through the course Blackboard email system if the course Learning Modules do not appear after taking the Orientation Review Quiz.
- Adding Courses and the Waitlist Process | Show FAQ
- How do I add an online course to my schedule after the term begins? | Answer
To add an online course the first week of the term, you must obtain instructor permission. Please contact the instructor for permission to add their course to your schedule. If you do not live in the Portland area, you may e-mail the instructor or the Distance Learning Program at dlsupport@mhcc.edu. Once permission is granted, an add slip will sent to admissions on your behalf and you will be added to the online class. Once your add slip has been processed, you will obtain access to the class the morning of the next business day. For same day access, please contact the Distance Learning Program at dlsupport@mhcc.edu before 4:00 p.m.
- I am on a course waitlist, what should I do? | Answer
Instructors are in control of the course waitlist typically on a first come first serve basis. When an opening is available, you may be enrolled into the course.
